"If I scrub my teeth really hard they'll be extra clean".
Teeth don't need to be scrubbed to make them clean, in fact gentle, circular brushing motions with a soft brush will remove plaque and food debris effectively. Hard brushes and abrasive toothpastes and a scrubbing technique will not remove ingrained stains or tarter but WILL over time cause gums to receed, sensitivity and wear to exposed root surfaces.
"I don't brush my teeth that often, but it's OK because I use mouthwash twice a day".
There is no effective replacement for brushing with a fluoride toothpaste, twice daily. Most mouthwashes on the market have some anti-plaque activity, but on their own they will not remove enough plaque to prevent decay or gum disease.
"I drink a lot of cans of soda, but it's ok for my teeth because they're all 'diet' drinks and have no sugar".
Diet soda drinks rarely contain sugars that will cause tooth decay, which is obviously advantageous to our teeth over those with sugar, however diet drinks have a high level of natural acidity. These acids can cause erosion of our teeth; that is dissolving of the enamel and dentine (this is different to decay, which is when plaque bacteria use sugar to make acids in our mouth). Erosion can result in sensitivity, wearing away of teeth, chipping and eventually damage to the nerve meaning root canal or extraction!! So diet drinks can be just as bad!!
