It’s essential for life, it’s plentiful, and it tastes pretty darn great too.

The benefits of good old H20 are common knowledge, especially in regards to the human body. Humans themselves are 60% water, so it’s no secret that it’s vital for humans and how we function.

But the benefits of drinking enough water every day go beyond just basic survival. Drinking lots of water each day has plenty of health benefits, especially when it comes to your oral health.

For starters, water strengthens your teeth

New Zealand is one of many countries in the world to add fluoride to our water. The amount of fluoride in our water (as of 2018) stands between 0.7 and 1.0 ppm (parts per million). Drinking water with added fluoride strengthens tooth enamel to make cavities and decay a lot less likely.

Drinking water also keeps your mouth wet. A dry mouth is the number one cause of bad breath, so keeping your mouth wet is the best way to keep bad breath at bay. Bacteria feeds on excess food particles left over from food you eat, and that bacteria causes halitosis, or more plainly, bad breath.

Bacteria thrive in a dry mouth, and chances of tooth decay are greatly increased if your mouth is too dry for too long. Gum disease and mouth sores are also much more likely in people who don’t get enough water.

Water improves the functioning of the body

Water can also help with weight loss! Drinking water as a replacement to juices and sodas can cause a significant positive effect on both your weight and overall health. Drinking enough water before meals can help prevent you from overeating and therefore gaining excessive weight.

It also helps to clear your skin if you have acne or other skin conditions. If dehydrated, your skin is much more prone to wrinkles and skin disorders, so staying hydrated can by a very beneficial first step to clearing up skin problems.

Water is essential to many parts of our body but in particular our kidneys. If the kidneys malfunction, waste and fluid will build up inside the body, causing many problems. Kidneys filter up to 140 liters of fluid per day, so drinking enough water is essential to the function of your kidneys.

Water is very essential to the healthy functioning of our bodies, so taking a few extra minutes to drink enough water every day can fix so many problems that you could face in the future.
